Big Bud Tractor History
The Big Bud tractor is an enormous custom-built farm tractor built by Ron Harmon and the crew at Northern Manufacturing Company for $300,000. Known as the “World’s Largest Farm Tractor,” it was initially commissioned by the Rossi Brothers of Bakersfield, California. The tractor produced 760 horsepower using a 16-cylinder Detroit Diesel engine and measured 27 feet long, 20 wide, and 14 feet tall.
United Tire Company of Canada specially manufactured 8-foot diameter tires. The Big Bud 747 weighs 135,000 pounds when fully ballasted, and its 1,000-gallon fuel tank has been filled. Leonard M. Semenza of Semenza Farms, located between Fort Benton and Chester, Montana, purchased two Big Bud 250 series tractors from Havre Montana’s factory for his 35,000-acre farm located between Fort Benton and Chester Montana in 1968.
An estimated 550 articulated tractors were manufactured and sold between 1970 and early 1991, representing some of the most powerful tractors ever built and sold. United Tire Company of Canada, the manufacturer of Big Bud’s custom 8-foot tires, went bankrupt in 2000, contributing to their decision not to use them anymore. There have been whispers that Big Bud might return in some form; one theory suggests an all-new model based on blueprints from original Big Bud 500 and 700 models may soon emerge.
