Allis Chalmers B Row-Crop Tractor model was born as the development of research by the company manager of Allis Tractor back then, Harry Merritt, around early 1930.
That was when tractors were mainly used on more big farms, with sizes above 100 acres, even though half of the farms were less than this size.
For that cause, Allis Chalmers B Row-Crop Tractor was designed to go into the market of small farms and replace horses.
Harry Merritt figured that the market required 4 million inexpensive, compact-sized tractors. Then, Model B became the 2nd generation of Allis Chalmers’ row-crop model.
Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company produced model Allis Chalmers B for about two decades – from 1937 to 1957. Around that period, more than 125,000 units were built. This number makes the Allis Chalmers B Row-Crop Tractor one of the company’s most famous and best-selling tractor unit models.
Renowned for its versatility and adaptability, it was also one of the company’s models with the most extended production period. It was designed into a few variations throughout the production years, such as Potato Special, IB industrial, and Asparagus B tractor.
Allis Chalmers B Row-Crop Tractor is a compact, light, and versatile unit. Combined with the technical factors that made it perfect and practical marketing, it is no wonder it achieved commercial success.
However, persuading the farmers who doubted the benefits of using the equipment back then was a challenge, and the marketing department of Allis had to work hard to prove that the new model B required less maintenance work than horses.
The Allis Chalmers B Row-Crop Tractor is a unit that comes with one of the three engines: either a 116.1 cubic inch (1.9L) 4-cylinder gasoline engine, a 113 cubic inch (1.9L) 4-cylinder gasoline-fueled engine, or 125.2 cubic inches (2.1L) 4-cylinder gasoline-fueled engine.
It uses a dry disc clutch, manual synchronizing transmission, and three forward and one reverse gear. The Allis Chalmers B model also uses a manual steering mechanism.
