VW/Audi 4.2 TDI Engine

Its 4.2-liter V8 TDI diesel engine is built on that of the 4.0-liter version. It was the first V8 TDI installed in Audi A8 in 1999 and had a 3.3-liter performance. This 4.2-liter engine was the final version of the V8 TDI series.

The engine features a cast iron cylinder block with the same bore space of 90 millimeters and 90 degrees V-shaped design as in the 4.0-liter version.

The engine received an iron crankshaft that was forged. The cylinder heads are of identical design to 3.0l V6 TDI heads.

They are made from aluminum alloy. They contain four valves for each engine, two camshafts, hydraulic tappets, and lifters. The machine has single-row timing chains at the rear that run through the engine’s end. This makes it extremely difficult to replace them.

VW/Audi 4.2 TDI Engine Problems & Reliability

The V8 4.2 TDI diesel engines are highly reliable in their reliability. However, some encountered issues with the intake manifolds and throttle.

The entire bearings on rods, axes, and levers within were constructed from plastic up to 2009 when they began to wear rapidly (40-50,000 miles). In the end, it reduced the power and torque due to various gaps and shifts.

The new ones were installed to replace the defective part later. The problem with them was never a problem again.
